Lufia Basics

Learn the Lufia Basics

I get a lot of e-mails every now and then asking me how to do very basic functions in the game. In this section, I hope to cover all of the basics of playing Lufia.

How to start a new game:

Believe it or not, some people don't know how to start a new game in Lufia. Some people have a used copy with multiple modes already available. The original mode that you want to select is "Initial," as in your initial, or first game. Move the hand to "Initial," and press A. You will then be brought to a screen that will allow you to enter your main character's name. After that, the intro will start. There is no way to skip this intro. After the intro, you will play as Maxim, and his 3 party members. This scene is very similair to the end of Lufia 2. After you easily beat the Sinistrals, your game will start.

How to fight:

Mastering the art of fighting in any RPG is always essential to your progress. In Lufia, the controls are rather basic, compared to games of today. In the middle of your party, is a cross with five different icons. A sword, a man running, a shield, an item bag, and a magical staff. These icons are rather straight forward. If you want to fight using your weapon, do nothing on the D-pad, and hit A. If you want to use an item, select the bag with the D-pad, (Be sure to hold down the button in the direction you select. If you let go of the Up, Down, Right or Left button, you will automatically be selecting the sword.) and hit A. The Running Man is used for escaping, the Shield is for blocking that round, and the Staff is for using a spell. To do a basic attack, select the sword icon, and press A. Then a sword will appear underneath one of the groups of monsters. Move the sword icon with the D-pad to select which monster or group you want to attack. When there are 2 or more of the same monster next to each other, you cannot select a specific monster to attack. If one of you party members kills a monster that another team member was supposed to attack, that team member will attack thin air, so knowing how much damage to give a monster is crucial in this game. Well, not crucial, but a good skill to learn. Using magic is pretty much the same. And items are about the same as using magic.

How to save, lift a cursed item, or revive a fallen party member:

The priests are found in the church of just about every town. When you talk to the priest, he'll give you three Options: Record, Lift, and Revive. If you want to save your game, select "Record." If you equipped a cursed item and want it removed, select "Lift." Lift only removes the item from your characters equipment, it does not remove the curse from the item. Sell all cursed items. If one of your party members has fallen in battle, select "Revive." For Lift and Revive, you will be charged money.

What your stat abbreviations mean:
